French lavender is a sight to behold in the fields of Provence every summer – and a scent to be treasured all year round. Join Elizabeth Seitz and Atout France for this special French culture interview with Provence native Elsa Lenthal as she demonstrates the lost art of ‘les fuseaux de lavande’ – lavender wands – which were used in times gone by around the house.
Elizabeth first met Elsa years ago at a local outdoor market in Provence; she grew up in the hills near the village of Les Baux-de-Provence. It was summer and she was crafting these colorful treasures from stems of fresh lavender and satin ribbons. Elizabeth was fascinated by the beautiful process, by the wonderful smell, by her devotion to this generations-old tradition and by her charming personality. During our session, Elsa will take us through the making of fuseaux, describe her thriving business and also walk us briefly through her fields of lavender near her home. Our time together will be live from the South of France – a special connection to the art and soul of Provence!
